BUSINESS 4NETWORKING [Love chatting to strangers or run the other way?] |

Just wondering how many of us dont mind chatting to someone say on the train or in a que somewhere and how many of us hate it? Twice in the past week I've seen this- firstly a guy asked another guy the time outside a shop and he got abuse back! and then on the train today this couple started a conversation with the couple opposite them, and within seconds they made their excuses and moved.
This seems really sad, I know there are nutters out there but Im convinced the majority of people are still good. I like hearing peoples stories and won my first small piece of business from someone I met on a train. Just wondered whether others like a good chat?, dont care either way? or run the other way?

I regularly embarrass my kids by chatting to complete strangers!
I used to run my own shop so always chat to shop owners as I know it can get a bit lonely and boring. I can easily talk to people if they have a baby or toddler with them as thats an easy way to start a conversation, and you can always talk to the 'older' generation about the weather.
I do give my B&B business card to people very occasionally but still feel a little embarrassed to do so - something I must get over!
I like your comment about 'there are nutters out there' Karen, Bridgwater is full of them..........hang on, maybe I am one???

I LOVE talking to strangers and make a very real effort to do so. In part because when people actually get to know me they no longer want to talk to me lol!! But seriously, I speak to anyone, anywhere and sometimes get to have a good chuckle with them. I also smile and say good morning to people I pass in the street ... some look at you like you are a loony tune, but occasionally you get the most amazing smile back ... worth every strange look.

the trouble with "on the train" is it isn't a quick chat, if you don't hit it off you could be with them for hours. some people are a joy to travel with some aren't.

This is true Mick, once I was stuck with a complete nutter on the Cardiff- Portsmouth train who went on about healing me and kept praying for me saying I was cursed it was sooo embarssing! & just plain weird, I must confess I faked an illness and legged it. Most people are fine though.

This is an interesting question.
I immediately thought "Oh, I love talking to strangers". But actually, I don't. I do love meeting new people and so when I put myself in that situation (like four times a week!), I genuinely really enjoy it.
However, if I am in a queue, or on a train, or walking around a supermarket, I am generally not in 'that' space and so quite honestly, I don't want to chitchat with just anyone... I want to bank my cheque or buy my sausages and get back to work!

Oh dear, perhaps I have some sort of sign above me, because I find if I don't talk to people, they seem to find me

I talk to pretty well anyone. My team of reps were always complaining about me picking up unwelcome people in doctor's waiting rooms.
Remember once striking up an interesting conversation with an old boy who was riding round the UK on his bike, and was clearly in an inter-bath stage, in Asda cafe in Govan. I returned there four hours later to have a meeting with four of my reps. Unfortunately he was still there, and came up and kissed me like a long lost friend. That sealed my reputation as a complete nutter, never mind his.
They thought I was fairly eccentric, but seem to fit right in down in Somerset. So I'm with you, Charmian. We are probably stalkers in the making..

My boys find this terribly embarrassing. I regularly try to strike up conversation with people who work in shops or other places I am, certainly I know everyone who works in 4N venues by first name and chat to them whenever I'm there. It's not a strategy but I can get away with murder with them by having that rapport.
I speak a little Greek. In our local market there is a 'Greek' guy selling olives, feta and the like, I often buy stuff from him. When I first saw him at the market I bought some stuff, got chatting to him, then asked him, in Greek, whereabouts he was from. He looked at me, leant over and said "look mate, I'm Iranian, but it ain't quite as popular as saying I'm Greek, know what I mean".

I like to speak to people. On my walk down to the village later, I will probably chat to several people, some were strangers when I first moved here, and some will be the first time we speak.
It can take ages to get to the bank! But I love the laid back lifestyle.

I've done this a few times on the train up to London - I remember once there was a lady with her son who was a litte and kept on kicking me under the table - because I have kids and know what they can do I just sat there politely chatting whilst he kicked me to death.

I'm quite shy, but still find myself getting into conversations with total strangers! Walking the dog practically guarantees a conversation. I've made more "friends" in the woods whilst walking my dog than anywhere else.
