For me, I like a nice clean design, nice flow of content (more information, than sales messages etc), not overpowering... How about you?

Targeted messages, relevant, organised, easy to navigate, useful, optimised - but I would say that one...
I detest sites that promise something interesting and then fail to deliver.... I also detest templated websites...

It is a mixture of things, really!
1. Content that is relevant to the user (your potential customer)
2. A design that is professional and attractive (subjective, but there are some things to avoid)
3. Coding that is first class
4. Overall, it must fit into your holistic marketing approach, branding and sales message.
5. Without shouting sales, it must be easy to act.
Not a complete list, but these are my top five.

For me, I am not massively bothered about the visuals, as long as it looks professional and isn't offensive and the navigation is clear.
If it's a business webiste and looks like someones brother did it in the back bedroom because cleaning cars is too cold then I am out of there ... irrespective of what they are selling. If there is an opening flash page then same deal ... I am out of there especially is there is no 'skip' button. If I have to spend ages downloading huge graphics/flash/video that are actually pointless I would take a dim view of that.
Beyond that is has to be relevent to my reason for being on it, the message has to be compelling and it has to have a way of ordering/contacting/expressing an interest/joining in (conversion) etc etc.
Oh and for business website I do generally check the stuff under the page to see how much the business actually cares about thier website. If they don't care enough to do the job properly why would I be bothered to do business with them.
I agree with Darren .. templated sites are a sure sign of someone not caring enough.
"relevent, compelling and conversion" are the subject of a 4sight I do about websites, so those are my big 3.
Phew ... I managed to resist the obvious retort: "What makes a website?" I do!

www.lingscars.com voted top 100 web sites - hugely busy, very entertaining and it changes daily. Ling lives in her site. Plus it has all the info I need and more. It's certainly not conventional.
Just read Nigel T. Packer's book on Internet Marketing - How to get a Web Site that works for your Business, which is a very useful reference for non techy people like me. I'm investigating updating my web site which is an Instant Site Builder - template. It was all I could afford at the time of starting out.

That's where the subjective bit comes in!! Because I absolutely would just log out of that site within half a nano second!!..It shouts cheap to me!!
But, of course, that is the business model, so it kind of works I guess. And without a site of the accounts I cant say how successful it is!

Wow - that is quite a site - I have to say it didn't do it for me other than to stare at it in a sort of horrified fascination (so I guess on one level it worked as I didn't immediately leave). On the main subject I hate it when a site says it will do something and then simply fails to deliver - ie you click on an interesting link and get nothing - or something other than described - a lot of sites seem to do this and it infuriates me because it is very sloppy and unprofessional. Agree whole heartedly with Karen re flash on home page - usually pointless drivel (apply the "so what?" test if you are thinking about doing this). Also video on a page particularly a home page that plays automatically - please give me the option of pressing play and tell me how long the video is going to last - otherwise I will close the browser and never return.

Seem to remember Ling quoting (in Chinglish) on Dragon's Den £2m turnover per year. Now she mentions over £2m / month - so it must be working OK. Her marketing methods are also a case history for A level students. She certainly uses every mm of space on the web page to maximise sales.

Fair enough - it just goes to show there is no universal "good" design that will please everyone. Personally I wouldn't hang around on that site but I guess others will so good for Ling.

Ling is certifiable!
She has a mobile missle launcher with her branding all over it - just shows being nuts can help your business take off...
What I look for in a website changes depending on what using it for (ecommerce or information) - both require good nav and clean (not necessarily lavish) design, and they must be quick (a perenial problem for launchlab!!)
my favourite site is www.thejohncleese.com - it's called 'the' John Cleese because a (pretty terrible) look-alike beat him to the more obvious domain name www.johncleese.com

Funnily enough, although I hate that website and very seriously doubt that any website in the uk is turning over £2m per month on cars just at the moment, I do agree with much of what she says apart from believing the website is a pet and you have to change it every day because that would depend on your business.
She didn't mention that you have to make it supremely ugly and annoying so maybe that is optional.
It really did make me laugh though that once you followed Garry's link you were stuck there because there is absolutely NO navigation on the page that I could see ... not even just a home page one! Perhaps Ling still has a little code to steal from other peoples websites. (That isn't me being prickly, in her script she does suggest people do that)
