I was very sceptical about PR for our business but decided on advice to give it a shot and to talk to the journalists who approach us. We are in the Guardian today!

Great so have you generated any business from it yet? Mrs Bucket Cleaning Co had half a page in the local paper today and is out canvassing right now. everytime she gets publicity her phone rings too so it's a great way forway. She puts in more effort because she is in print and gets the calls too.

Take a look at Google uk for both Rachael Flanagan and Mrs Bucket Cleaning and you'll see she dominates both yet only 2 months ago she didn't even touch the front page. I've done the same with Mike Leahy except that my namesake of Rough Science fame can't be budged at the moment. And we are getting response from this.

Publicity is great, make the most of it. link the online article to your site, when you write about it in this forum put in a link. Get some articles written and a blog up there all linked back. It is on-going and anyone can be successful if they stick to basic rules. Write good copy that is relevant, don't try to be smart, use local papers and magazines, get stuff on on-line mags, get social website action and above all keep at it. There should be the article on the Guardian website sio do a link to that and e-mail all your clients and prospects.

But does it work? Do you ask every caller where they found you? Only about 8% of all businesses track inquiries so the don't know what pays.

Good luck! And I like your website, everything of importance is visible as soon as you hit your site. I'd only make your phone number more prominent using perhaps bold and a point size larger. I did have a problem reading as the text seems to be slightly grey but I'm just suffering from wearing out.

Hope this isn't telling you how to suck eggs.

Thanks Mike for the tips and help. Some of the work you recommended is in hand and some is already completed. We are including this in our newsletter which was covering IP issues and infringement already so this is a nice bonus and a good opportunity to notify clients without just doing an email for trumpet blowing purposes.

We use www.kashflow.co.uk for our quotes and this provides us with details of drill down information of where they come from and also what sort of prospect they are. The cost is only £10 ish a month and the report running function is excellent.

The article in the Guardian today has been good for increased hits to our site on the IP pages and also purchases of the service both on line and via phone.

Hi Sue

How did the Guardian get to hear about your company?  Had you sent them releases or called them to generate their interest?

Good on you and I'm sure you know that editorial is worth 3 times advertising - think what that would have cost you!

Now to maximise on this you need to:

-send the coverage to all your prospects either via direct mail or in an email blast,

-approach the Guardian for permission to capture the article

- feature it on your website and

- put it in all new business pitches you do.

That way you get 3 bites of the cherry - the Google search engine, the Guardian archives website and your own website.

Best of luck, Gaye

One of our clients had informed the person collating information about this SME problem about our service and they phoned us. We have had mentions in PC User and other techie magazines but always via random calls to us we have never done any PR, just responded to approaches.

We have certainly reviewed our position on including PR in our marketing now and have already done what you suggested, thank you for the tips. The link is going out on our new quotes and also in our emails and of course the next newsletter which has an article about IP infringement.
