Brad
I have noticed some odd things happening with Google and how forum threads are picked up.
For example I posted a thread 'VAT Historical Timebomb' on Tuesday and by yesterday it was on top of Google for the exact phrase and near the top for similar. Others I've posted have done the same and stayed. However I posted a thread on classifieds for anyone wanting help on VAT changes and although this went straight to number 2 on Google by the next day it had completely disappeared altogether - its not just a case of it slipping down the rankings because if you do a site search..
VAT at 15% - system changes for Microsoft Access applications site:www.4networking.biz
..its disappeared off the face of Google (although the VAT Time Bomb is found). So why was it found, ranked and removed all within a couple of days??

I know with new sites, there is a 'sandbox' affect. Websites sometimes appear a lot lower than they should be at first and then slowly move up as rankings are adjusted.
However I have recently seen the opposite (as in your case Ken). Websites (and pages) seem to get a boost of some sort and then are readjusted over time to their proper location. When we perform SEO we use this as an earlier indicator but thats all, new sites and pages can be shuffled about at will by Google until they finally rest around the correct area (this can take months)

I can see how pages can be moved whilst finding there correct level but why did my thread disappear altogether.
Also many other similar threads I have posted have found a level and stayed there - eg I posted Microsoft Help, Support and Advice in November - it went to number 2 inside three days and has stayed there.

- Google do not adjust their algorithm just for improvement they also do it to correct bugs.
- There are many UK servers for the Google search engine not all of them have the same algorithm Google test new ones on some of the other servers.
- When the load on the normal server you use goes too high they switch some of the load to other servers (test this by Ping www.google.co.uk in the morning and then in the afternoon and the IP address may well be different)

That explains an awful lot! So presumably pinging will potentailly lead to different IP addresses?
