Subject: Server Update
4N Server
We believe that the server has suffered an unknown hardware failure. The earliest we can call Dell is 08:00. The server has just over two years warranty left on it. The support is next business day so a worst case scenario is that we will not be able to get the Dell engineer to site until next Monday. Fingers crossed they will be on site later today.
As soon as we have more info I will be in touch.
The 4N Website
The site is now running on a backup server. All data i.e. bookings, membership etc. is exactly correct as this is held in the database which is on a different server. There are a few problems that we are aware of at this moment in time:
1. There are missing images on the site – this is because the latest copy of the MyFiles directory is still on the main 4N server which is of course not working at the moment.
2. Some links from the home page are not working e.g. welcome page
3. The site may be a little slower (this is a backup server after all).
We have tested the following main interactions on the site for day to day functionalilty:
1. Forum use
2. Viewing events
3. Printing attendance lists
4. Booking users
5. Managing membership
6. Other My Team functionality
And these are all ok.
Actions for first thing in the morning
1. Arrange Dell engineer
2. Get links working (this is probably a setting for the web server that has been missed so nothing to worry about and will be corrected very quickly)
3. Where broken images occur replace red cross with a blank spacer to stop alignment problems on display and people pointing out that the image is not working for the following locations:
a. Bottom recent users navigation bar
b. Avatars next to forum posts
c. 4N photos page
4. Stop the upload on the profile pages with a note to say why – we don’t want to end up with two different versions of the MyFiles directory for the sake of a few hours of no images and it will be a real pain to then merge the two different sets of data when we get back to the right server.
5. Double check card payments in case server is not operational until early next week.
As myself and Paul have been here until about 4 am can you pass apologies to the Gordano and Exeter team.
Regards
Tim Howes

Firstly hats off to Team SSIWEB for handling this immiediatly when they was notified by me at 22:00, its for this reason that after we chose SSIWEB to handle the 4N.biz site.
We could have got the website cheaper overseas, absolutely. But could we have got the team on standby, local meetings with the team whenever we need them and well a constant and first class service. Not a chance. We realised this when making that purchasing descion Its the whole package you pay for not just the front bit.
Its the stuff of legend the rows I've had with the vulcans over, but there diligence is frustrating for a make it happen guy like me sometimes.
If you've a business that relies on an online element, make sure you get a supplier you can ring at 10pm and they stay up till 4am!
Again well done team SSIWEB, highly reccomended http://www.4networking.biz/members/view.htm?UserID=15049
As per the above email, you've as much information as to where we are as I have. Obviosuly we'll keep the community informed.

Fridays seem to be the days when disasters happen. Like last Friday for us. What is important, as you say, is having a good backup system in place and a reliable and loyal team to help you through!

Brad, I'm really impressed with the way you've kept us updated with the problems on the site. Thanks.
Best wishes,

As someone who has delivered big e-commerce systems I know that server problems are almost inevitable, whatever steps you take servers are only computers and subject to hardware, software and environmental issues just the same as any other computer. What makes the difference, along with the level of resiliance you build in, is the way that your provider responds to the problems.
So, big hats off to SSIWeb for having sound continuity plans and for responding so quickly.
Brad is absolutely right ... cheap stuff is not always the best value in the long term!

That's hardly impressive performance really. Now impressive would have been if they had gone straight from working on the server at 4am to Gordano to be there at 6am for a breakfast and an early start!
Well done Paul and Tim!

It did cross my mind Dean (honest) but I have an Xmas meal in about an hour's time and another at Home Farm Hotel tonight! _ being dead on my feet means I will be getting another couple of hours sleep this afternoon first... Glad to be of help, hardware failures never come at a convenient time...
