I'm after your thoughts on my design portfolio link is here: http://www.dot-design.co.uk/portfolio-2/ If you'd be so kind. Does the work within it appeal to your business, I have plenty of good comments from other designers and current clients but I just wanted to get a general overview from a variety of business's on this forum as I'm new to it and you will be seeing me with fresh eyes, as 99% of you will no nothing about me or my business. Also is my site in general putting you off or turning you on? Are my fees too much or too little for the kind of work I produce? http://www.dot-design.co.uk/design-prices-rates/ Please let me know your thoughts good or bad. Also considering attending a local 4networking event, what should I expect, I've heard they are friendly and informal which is my style really, but other than that I not sure what to expect. Thanks for taking the time to read this, I look forward to your feedback. All the best Gareth

Hi Gareth

Your design work looks great.  The prices look very reasonable but not so cheap it would put me off. (Cheap would probably mean I wouldn't consider you because I equate cheap with low value, I know that's my problem, but suspect I'm not alone).

The site would put me off a little, because it does look like a wordpress blog rather than a website, which means the navigation is not that intuitive, on the portfolio page I thought the list of topics were links to samples of that type of work.  It is also a tad slow at delivering the images, not enough to put me off, but I did notice it.

Hope that helps.

Hi Karen

Thanks for taking the time to look through the site etc. Your feedback is very valuable to me indeed.

Glad to hear that price wise I seem to have it right, though others might not agree with this?

The site is wordpress based which has a great number of positives but also a few negatives which you touched on. Interesting what you said about the images not loading very quickly, will have to take a look into that. Will take a look at your website also, and thanks again Karen - do you attend any of the 4networking events, if so I'd be interested to know what you think?

Cheers
Gareth

I do attend the breakfast events and would really recommend them.  I get along to most of the Oxfordshire based ones as well as Aylesbury.  Someone here (much cleverer than me) said people do business with people not websites and that is true (unless you are amazon et al!). So the 1 to 1 sessions are invaluable.

The SME market is not our traditional customer base, but the 4n net casts wider than you can imagine so as well as doing work with some members we have had interest from large organisations they are associated with.  I don't think any of those people would hae volunteered a referral if we hadn't done the 'meet-know-like-trust' thing face to face.

You are, of course, more than welcome to look at our own website but it is currently being redeveloped and does suffer a bit from the cobblers shoes thing, so don't judge us too harshly!!  Two of the more recent websites we have built for 4n members include:   James Minion's and Nina Cole's. These are more representative of our work!

Thank you James and thanks for taking the time to call earlier and tell me about your 4networking experiences and the benefits etc, much appreciated!

Thanks also Karen, I think I'm going to go along to one locally next week as it seems to be highly recommmended. Already had a look at James Minions site, looks good will check out Nina Coles.

Thanks again to you for your time

Hi Gareth. Work looks quality.
The 'scientist' one near the bottom - next to barbican - has the title missing.

I would:
Remove the -2 from the URL
Link the 'Design services' to their relevant pages
Add your own copyright/ company details in the footer.

etc

Oh .. and I've never been a fan of putting prices online as each project is different, (except of course when you're selling packages).

Hope that helps.

Hi Lee

Thanks for you views, I appreciate your thoughts especially from a seasoned professional like yourself.
I'll make those changes as I think they are all an improvement, your right about the prices, I put them up because I got the feeling that potential customers thought I would be expensive when looking at my portfolio, but your right they aren't very flexible and every project is different, and I've be considering changing or removing them for awhile.

Thanks again Lee. appreciated!

Gareth

I love that site, and I'm still impressed that you did it on wordpress. In terms of showing prices, with web/graphic design being so varied I don't think putting a label on a package helps anymore. You're work in fantastic and speaks for itself.

Thank you very much Matthew, you also have some good work yourself, I particualry like the 'emedia' website design in your portfolio. Do you offer print/graphic design as a service as well as web design?

thanks again, Gareth
