Hi Everyone,

I've just finished the basic layout/design for my companies new site and thought I'd ask you all what you think and what improvement could be accomplished. Nothing is ever perfect especially when there is only one view point so any feedback is grately appreciated.

site is www.ebswebdesign.co.uk

Smart stuff, on quick glance.

The photo of the lady on the contact page is a little eerie though, maybe better to have her looking at the pc screen with phone to ear?

Hi Matthew

The site looks gorgeous, if it was my thing I would sit the navigation outside of the scoller rather than scroll in the whole page.

<geek stuff>

Still some technical stuff to look at, there are a few vaildation errors and if you did as mentioned above you could get the source ordering a bit slicker but this isn't a biggie.  The thing you do need to look at is your header definitions as you have no H1 but a whole bunch of H2's you could set your home panes headers to H1 but have identical styling to the H2's.  In your css you have your body font set to 0.7em and your line height to 16px in your page text containers you have the font set 14px and line height 1.4ems ... for reliable rendering you should match the units.

</geek stuff>

In terms of accessibility trying to use the site without a mouse is a tad tricky (try tabbing to the navigation, the menu outside of the scroller might fix this) and if someone views the page without styles or with an audible reader you still have some lorem ipsum stuff tagged on at the end.

Overall .... nice work

On a very personal note, I would very rarely do business with people that don't give company and address information, having an 0800 number and a contact form makes your business look like its hiding something.

As usual I always agree with Karen!
Things I would also change:
Lose the favicon image/ link
Change the slideshowpro interface to match your brand (also fullscreen button doesn't work)
You've got a lump of javascript in the header (for a gallery) - is that used anywhere? If so, reference it externally to keep the pages clean.

And yes, I'd never do business with a company that I cannot check there business details first.

Isn't this a legal requirement for businesses (certainly if VAT Registered and at Companies House I thought it was?)

Yes if it is a registered company you have to have the company registration and the registered address on the website.  I rather suspect Matthew's isn't a registered company.

Yeah it is a requirement, it's still in development at the moment as our main web site is www.essentialebizsolutions.net. So there will be a footer with all the lovely legal information and the links will be in one of the slide panels. With the JS we played with a few galleries and I'll be using the jquery galleria as a fall back for non-flash users. Once it's all done the gallery will link to hidden slides that will contain case studies. With the slideshow pro, got a lot of tweaking to do with it. I'm glad for the most of it you all like it, and thank you for being honest.

Hi Everyone,

I've taken your feedback and an updated version has now been uploaded.I took Karen's advice and moved the navigation out of the slider. I've added my footer now so all the company registration info is there now. The H1 tags have been added to the logo as semantically it's the main header as all the content sits on one page. And all the cotent is there now so no lurking lorem ipsum.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Looking much better.

A few things I would say need checking - a few title tags and relevant file naming:

Change:
<div class="contact-us"><img src="_inc/images/number.png" alt="Contact EBS Web Design" height="24" width="195" /></div>

To:
<div class="contact-us"><img src="_inc/images/telephone_number.png" alt="Telephone EBS Web Design on 0800 327 7935" title="Telephone EBS Web Design on 0800 327 7935" height="24" width="195" /></div>

for example.

You also need to check this:

"is water wet or dry?"Is water wet or dry? <-- Spacing between "... dry?Is ..."

Thanks for that Lee, thought I had already done that. With the team working on other projects I've not had the luxury to have an in house review like we do with clients work, this is where little mistakes would be picked up.

Hi Matthew -

Good to see a website with some benefits at the front.  The Home Page just needs tidying up slightly (especially as there's an exclamation mark in the middle of a sentence!) and strengthening. After a very quick look, I suggest the following (short sentences, bullet points for more impact etc.):

We're one of the leading Web Design and Development companies in the UK. We offer high quality designs and rich Internet solutions, from e-Commerce through to bespoke content management services:

  • Our expertise and skills will significantly boost your Internet presence
  • We can take you to the top of the search engines so that more customers can find you more easily
  • Look no further for your various web design/development needs - because we can deliver all of the right solutions!

Hope this helps

Phil

Feel free to correct me but would the main paragraph be better off NOT being split:
"... companies in the UK offering high quality designs and rich Internet solutions from e-Commerce through to bespoke content management services:"

Also - I am always wary of companies offering up statements like this:
"We can take you to the top of the search engines ..."
Possibly change to "We can help you ..." rather than "We can take you"

The front page copy is served best on the new site as a full paragraph like Lee states, I think you must have been looking at my old site Phil, as the new one only has an exclamation mark at the end of the paragraph. The statement "we can take you to the top" refers to design and consultancy, not SEO. I glad to though that you like the design as that is the main element at the moment, all the copy etc is being re-worked to more accurately sell our services.
