Hi guys, interested in opinions here.
From a business perception point of should I actually use the various letters after my name?
Would putting, Christopher Hatch B.Sc. (Hons) PGCE on business cards and the like be considered advantageous, could it detract or might it make no difference.
Currently I ignore then, but if they are considered an advantage I should make a use of them!
Cheers,
Chris

I don't put the letters after my name, though a few have said I should.
My personal opinion is that they really don't mean a great deal to your regular person and can appear somewhat pretentious and sometimes a barrier.
A question to ask yourself: Does it add value?

I would say probably not, unless you are promoting yourself as an educational consultant. How do you react if you see letters after anyone else's name?

Wise words. 2 cards may be the answer, depends who you're meeting whether it is significant. There are occasions when it is important to indicate you have the correct level of competence.

Thank you all, I think it confirms what I already thought that they would serve no massive advantage and might even detract in some ways.
I will stick with just plain Chris Hatch!

I think because the PGCE isn't relevant to the industry you're in now (although a fantastic qualification to have) I don't think it would add the credibility that Simon mentioned in his response. That is simply going to come from getting to know you.
I have a small set of business cards with my letters after my name (no, not U.G.L.Y. or B.R.A.T. as my Dad would say) that I use when it's crucial to get the point across that I know my stuff (for example, when working with lawyers who would usually look down their nose at me until they realise it's the same letters as they have after their name)

HI Chris
I'd put the letters after your name. Anything that adds to your credibilty is useful.
Lots of people out there doing jobs without the qualifications - this might set you apart as a serious player.

It certainly isn't relevant for places like 4N where the person is more relevant than the title (which is fortunte for some of us!), but think about exactly who you would be giving your cards to. I would defo go with the 2-card scenario.

I find cards which just have a degree on them eg. "John Smith B.Sc" incredibly pretentious.
However as some have said above I think professional qualifications are worth including if it will help to cut some ice with others in the same profession.

I would definatly use them Chris!
You worked hard enough to earn the right to use them and I think that It does also create more credibility, even if your current job does not relate to them.
Having said that, there are letters that I have, but dont use..It would be to long on my card, so I just use the 2 degre's.
People actualy comment on them.....ooooohhhh you have a law degree.....so what are you doing selling mobile phones? I get it all the time!!
Definatly use them Chris!

My dh uses his - he's an accountant and possibly seeing FCCA, MAAT on the business card adds credibility - even though many folk don't actually know what they stand for!
