I am treating myself with a new present - I want to buy a Dell Vostro and as far as I know you can't get any better deals than from Dell themselves. Does anyone have any info on this?

Christell,
I have bought and used Dells for years now and unless you are buying lots of machines then you will not get any discount of the price. You will notice from the website that they have deals on equipement all the time.
You ask about laptops then talk about a Vostro which is a standalone machine, so a bit confused.
Any way when buying a new PC either laptop or standalone set yourself a budget and stick to it. Things to consider if you set a budget of say £400 for a standalone machine expect to pay twice as much to get a Laptop of similar spec, a lot of people make the mistake of trying to get a laptop for the same budget as a standalone machine. Yes it can be done but you will always be disappointed.
Couple of things when looking to buy a new machine; think about what you want to use it for. Seems a strange question but you could very easy over spec in an area you are not going to use. Second invest in memory over CPU speed as the onboard memory will always give you a better return. If you are going to run Windows Vista you need to be mindful of ensuring the graphics card is up to the job, just because it says it will run it, and it will you could be waiting a long time for each action then you will be upset.
iOpening are a reseller of Dell and would be more than willing to get a machine that fits your requirements. If you want you can always just discuss what you want to use it for and I will advise accordingly what are the best options for you, give us a ring when you are free and we will see how we can help.
Not sure if my ramblings help.

Dave

If your Toshiba is a few years old, is it worth looking at the latest Toshiba's? I worked in very large corporate for many years, and we were entirely dependent on good spec hardware for efficicient operation. Our gear had very short shelf life because of hard work, and need to upgrade frequently. So we were very aware of which brands delivered reliability and performance over large numbers of people. Company swithered between IBM, Dell and Toshiba depending on good deals and ability to cope with systems ie performance.
Reliability was only apparent over time. IBM - terrible! Had 12 hard drive changes in 24 months! 60+% of field force computers were out of action at one point! Dell were OK, but not squeaky. Plus had to upgrade models frequently. When we had Toshiba's (we had 3x YToshiba phases) we hardly ever had anyone out of action because of hardware problems, and we were able to keep same computers for long periods (great because didn't have hassle of transferring data - which they never did properly). Their only downfall was their weight.

Toshiba and Sony fan.
Based on a survey of 4 users.
Ok..I'm not helping, but its the weekend.!!
It depends on what your usage is going to be. If its light usage, go cheap but mainstream brands, and quadruple check the spec.
If its central to your business, forget cheap and go for quality. Most brands, if looked after, will survive 3 to 5 years, although I change mine sooner, just to be sure.

Hi Christell,
Good to meet you at Cirencester recently.
I am a Dell corporate reseller and even I can't get the Vostro range any cheaper than the prices on their web site.
I've supplied both Vostro laptops and desktops and so far so good. As long as you understand that they are Dell's entry level business machines, you'll find them to be good qualtiy and specification for little money.
