Hello
I have posted various threads about SEO work and this what we have been offered. I am right to think that this is a complete joke?
- Add the website to the top UK search engines (Google, Yahoo, Ask, MSN, Lycos, AOL) (Every 6 Months)
- Reports on how well your website is ranking on those search engines (Every Month)
- Reports on how the website is ranking against your top 5 competitors (Every Month)
- Report on potential link partners for your website to link with (Once a Year)
- A report on potential niche markets which may open new windows on keyword optimisation (Every 6 Months)
- Add descriptive text below the main structure of the page, this text will include search engine friendly text that will give you chance to provide the users with text on your products (One Off)
- Help to improve your keyword density with a in-depth look on how you are using the keywords effectively (Ongoing Email support)
Our site needs work and I can't see how this can help?
Any input would be great.
Cheers
Regards
Ian Storer

Hi Ian
I can't believe any serious SEO person has looked at your site and the complete list of what would help is above! Your first priority should be, without question, getting your site right. You need to, at least, add a description meta and H1 text to all your pages. Beyond that, getting your site built correctly would help.
A search engine report for your site is here for your info
I would steer clear of the company that offered you the above stuff!
Hope that helps.

Yeah I totally agree with Karen, the company really doesn't sound like they have a clue about SEO. The two most important points are the last three (the last two of which are pretty much the same thing) which are site content, the rest of the information can be gained by yourself in just a few minutes. I don't specalise in the field but the general consensus appears that site content and good ranking, relevant links into you site are the best way to go. The first is pretty easy but time consuming the second if you suceed let me know :)
There's quite a few people I've noticed on these forums that specalise in this type of work though and I'm sure that they would be more than happy to help you out, just look out for the signatures.

Sigh, some people who offer SEO just never learn....
- Add the website to the top UK search engines (Google, Yahoo, Ask, MSN, Lycos, AOL) (Every 6 Months)
BS - your site will be found by Google et all naturally by links to your website
- Reports on how well your website is ranking on those search engines (Every Month)
Google Analytics, its free and extremely useful
- Reports on how the website is ranking against your top 5 competitors (Every Month)
You can check a search engine yourself. These numbers mean nothing unless you act on them (which you should be naturally with addtions of new content and linkbuilding efforts).
- Report on potential link partners for your website to link with (Once a Year)
Yahoo Site Explorer - run your competitor domains and analyse their links any time you want
- A report on potential niche markets which may open new windows on keyword optimisation (Every 6 Months)
Every 6 months? You want to react that slowly to new markets? You'll forever play catch up.
- Add descriptive text below the main structure of the page, this text will include search engine friendly text that will give you chance to provide the users with text on your products (One Off)
Sounds like spam, search engine friendly text? Tosh, you want visitor friendly text that persuades, invokes a response from your website user and generates the most opportunities for business.
- Help to improve your keyword density with a in-depth look on how you are using the keywords effectively (Ongoing Email support)
Keyword Density is a myth. Natural language and keyword variance is the way forward. I've never bothered with Keyword Density, if you read your text and you think it sounds repetitive (due to keyword stuffing) then it likely is, if thats the case then change it.

Darren...a loud hurrah. Seriously. Some common sense!!
If between us we could persuade customers to stop listening to the myths and build effective, user friendly sites we would find our customers with more paying customers of their own. And then website marketeers, or whatever you want to call them could get on with the exciting bits!! And people like Ian would get better advice
Ian...the best tip I could give you is to listen to the guys and guyettes above..they will be ready and willing to assist and probably save you money. They have excellent track records.

Karen did our site and I just ran it through the raven optimizer jobby and this is what it said
Congratulations! Your Web design scored 100 points out of a possible 100. Your Web page may not be perfectly optimized, it contains most of the elements necessary for search engine optimization.
I have also spoken to Darren at length and he knows his stuff to.

HI,
My webdesigner did all this for me and put me at the top of many searches in no time at all (four weeks), but what I really appreciated was that she spoke to me in 'English''. Personally I couldn't recommend her highly enough...give her a call. She'll discuss it for free and simplify all the Geek speak that frankly I'm not interested in.
She's on 4N and I know is working for other 4N clients too.
