CAN YOU HELP? [Advertising with thebestof?] |

I'm thinking about advertising with my local thebestof - does anyone have any experience of working with thebestof generally? I know it's a franchise so variable depending on the franchisee, and I get on very well with my local ones who they are very pro-active with what they do.
I am wary though, as it is an additional expense and I've not had great results from any of the traditional advertising I've tried in the past. Links from free online directories may have brought me leads for my other business, though, and I know several came through my free listing in Yellow Pages/Yell. Is it worth upgrading to thebestof and/or other premium online directories? Does anyone have any good or bad experiences they wouldn't mind sharing, or advice generally?
Thanks from Confused of Coventry.

I have just joined Best of Bristol.
Advertising doen't generally work for me but given the difficult times ahead I decided to experiment.
Reasons for chosing best of......
A good shelf life
No more than 3 competitors in your sector
A reasonable website , that's about to be revamped any day now.
An intro rate
The copy writer did a good job see www.thebestof.co.uk/bristol/69346/1/1/the_best_of.aspx
But as always it is only part of the marketing mix.
To date no leads but it is very early days.
Hope this helps

Hmmm, interesting - thanks for all the responses and the PMs - sounds like it's been a mixed bag for folk. My local franchisees here in Coventry are absolutely lovely, though having a ball out for a drink with them doesn't necessarily mean advertising with them's the thing - definately part of the meet, like, know, trust thing though! They also run a big networking event which I'm off to tonight, which is free for members so would offset some of the monthly fee. I shall give it some more thought and probably try it out for a while to see how it goes.

Hello Sarah - We advertise on Best of Chester and it has brought good recommendations and i must add "Paul Daniels" the owner of the Chester branch is fast becoming the best of the best of websites
The social life is very good as well as they organise an evening meeting every 3 months which allows for lots of mutual networking - if you have the same in your area then, it is very benificial

Hi Sarah
We advertise with the best of nottingham and if you type 'promotional gifts, nottingham' in google we are normally number 1. We had an enquiry earlier this week come through from it and could be a £2k+ order. And we have had a few enquires through it over the past 18-24 months. Well worth the £10 a month we pay.
Pricing does vary from region to region as they get a choice what to charge you, I think it normally is around £29 upwards so we got a good deal.

I agree on the variability.
We're with TBO Harlow which does get us on to Page 1 of Google but advertising with other towns have been less successful.
I think they are launching a new website next week.

TBO are launching a new site next week - and if our local people are anything to go by, then it's a good idea to consider.
Anyway, internet advertising is the way to go - according to the IT marketing gurus!

Sarah,
I too advertise on Best of Bristol and am "lead" advertiser. That means I have a revolving banner thingy and am top of their 1st page, for all to see. http://www.thebestof.co.uk/bristol The boys at BoB (Neil K, in the main) have assured me that if you get in early enough, they will honour early advertisers over any future attempts to bump from top spot.
BoB has also increased my prescence on SEOs. I've added 3rd Top spot worldwide on Google out of 60,300 currently for "Adrian Cavill" (although #2 is my last job!) purely because of BoB but main one is company name (Cartel) and town name (Bristol), where I'm 2nd spot out of 197,000 on Google Worldwide. Unfortunatley, there's a band in Bristol called "Cartel", which has bumped me to 2nd spot, but watch this space......!
Prescence here is well worth it and VERY easy to refer potential clients to web site and I'm confident it will pay dividends in the long term.
Hope that helps
Regards, Adrian

Sarah, advertising on the Best of Cardiff and the Best of Penarth was all I did other than use 4N to promote my business... The combination worked perfectly as potential clients often found my page on TBO site (my own site was nowhere to be seen!).

I think it depends on your business I had no response from Bestof, exept other people trying to sell me more ad space, the one thing that I did get from it was a Spam email from a Mr Burton inviting me to look at 4Networking, which'll never work.
