CAN YOU HELP? [Daft question regarding stationery and tax allowances]

Hi all, I would be grateful for some advice - I am filling in my online tax return. Is there a set rate I can claim weekly for stationery and stamps if working from home?

I don't use much apart from printer paper, envelopes and a small amount of postage - I don't often keep receipts as I use it for non-business use as well as business use, so with envelopes and paper there is no easy way to divide the two.

I have never bothered including this before in previous tax returns but want to claim all entitlements if possible this year.

Many thanks,

Claire

Hi Claire,

There is no set rate you can claim for specific payments of this nature. The simple rule is; if you have a receipt, and it is wholly and exclusively for the purposes of the business (or, at least, the claimed element is) then you can claim it.

If you don't keep your receipts, then your options are limited, Far better to keep all receipts, and try to come up with a reasonable estimate of what the business / personal split is for your tax return,

You can claim a 'round sum' allowance for working from home, which is designed to cover all busines expenditure, but, without receipts, this is restricted to £2 per week, or £104 per year.

Hope that helps.

Alan

Thanks Alan! I'll claim the £2 per week flat rate.
