 CAN YOU HELP? [Help -intro to Armed services] |

I have no connection or involvement or usually much interest in the armed services. However, the recent reports of low morale amongst our soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, and their concern at the seeming lack of support from 'the home front' has touched a chord. The boys are embroiled in a nasty situation and deserve our support, regardless as to what we may think of why they are there in the first place. I don't know if my services - as a DebtDr and as a Clinical Hypnotherapist would be of help to any of them, but as a token of support I would like to offer discounts to any returning servicemen who may be experiencing financial difficulties and would benefit from help and advice in dealing with these; and therapeutic help for stress-related conditions and post-trauma stress.
Anyone out there who could help to get that message to service personnel, or advise how best to achieve that?

Alan I am not sure if you are aware but medical assistance is offered free of charge to soldiers. This is carried out by way of a briefing before leaving theatre, then a families brief before going home, then a low level medical 1 week later and the filling in of a questionnaire.
If any soldier needs further treatment it is provided at no cost to the individual.

Pete, that is how it is supposed to work. I got no briefing, de-brief, chat or anything after being in Baghdad and it didn't change after our guys were killed in the Herc. Unfortuatley though Alan, you will be lucky t get a serviceperson to admit anything is wrong or they need any counselling. You may have better luck with the Debt advice if you can get to the Admin sections, i have kept my Mess mebership at Lyneham and still play golf with the society so will ask around for you.

Neil sorry to hear about your friends in the C130 of course you are right at times, things do not work as they should.
One thing Alan should be aware of in his line of business is the need for him to be security checked. There could be scope to offer service personnel help in regards to dealing with trauma, however as you are aware Neil, there are set procedures to be followed when dealing with service personnel.
They tend to be protective of soldiers being conned by clever businessmen, this led to all the car dealers in Germany being given their marching orders from the camps. If a product or service can get MOD endorsement there is certainly a good market for most things, however getting in can be very difficult.

I left the force in 1987 and the most popular read was "Sixth Sense" and the Forces Echo" both monthly publications - you could enquire about these for an advert - start at your local Army carriers in your High Street
Also - when posted on a 6 month tour, single lads can't spend their money so they stock pile their wages and buy cars etc when they come home - for cash!
Cars are normally bought duty free and exported for 2 years - then imported, however they can't be sold for 1 year otherwise they have to pay full taxes - been there and done that

Hy Guys,
Thanks, Neil for passing on that message, and thanks all for your respones.
Neil and Pete, I have no connection with the military, so your comments very helpful. I am reacting at present very much to what I have read in newspapers: eg soldiers are receiving poor medical help on return to the UK. I have worked with the police service - as a stress manager - providing counselling for post-trauma and my impression was that institutionally and individually it is increasingly recognized that such counselling is very effective and a great help. Unfortunately the provision of such a help is I imagine very patchy and generally inadequate - which Neil's experience would suggest. A number of complementary therapies are very effective in ameliorating the effects of post-traumatic stress. It is a pity that such therapies are not available as part of the free medical treatment for servicemen/women, nor for the most part are they provided by medical insurances, and that the only way that service personnel can access such help is to pay for it. Thus my offer of help for any service personnel who want to complement the 'official' medical help that they receive.
Dave, thanks for the info about the journals, and, Pete, an intro to your financial advisor would be much appreciated.

Hi Alan
I think providing debt assistance would not be too difficult, I will speak to my friend at the weekend, we are having a boxing night, not literally but on TV.
In regards to stress management, god this would be difficult and would need full MOD endorsement if you wanted to get inside the fence, doing it freelance is awkward as it is not the sort of thing people go looking for. My advice would be to speak to SAFFA. It will certainly help the fact you have provided a service to the police.
