Hi All - OK, I would suggest you consider what you want from the laptop - what will be its main purpose in life - is it going to be a heavily used business machine or is it mainly for playing solitare on...? I suppose what I'm saying is buy the machine that suits your needs, not one that the salesman recommends or has all the latest and flashiest gizmos on it - however and this is worth noting - most macines will now be running windows vista ( in one of its various flavours) so be warned - you will need a machine that has PLENTY of ram (1.5 - 2Gig) as vista has proved to be particularly memory hungry when running - buy a machine with only min. ram on it and watching paint dry will be faster!
It's also worth noting that vista is only in its first incarnation, so IF you can  get hold of windows XP and the service pack patches (there are at least two major ones) it's worth using these instead - it'll be a good 12 months before Mr Gates' crowd get the gremlins out of this one...

I personally run a beatsie of an IBM (Lenovo) Z60m titanium with 2Gb of ram great mac - but then I use mine every day ... cut your cloth accordingly i say...

Also worth thinking about is Christmas is coming so they will be trying to sell you anything - if you can, why not wait until the sales..?!

Just some thoughts...

Can I direct you to this link.

A number of people, ourselves included, have taken up this option.

http://www.utilitywarehouse.co.uk/store/broadcall.taf

you'll need to scroll down to the centre of the page where it says broadcall laptop.  If it's just one laptop you need which will be running on a home internet access it may be just want you want.

Great tip Deb! Works out to be a really good deal provided you don't make too many calls on the landline.

Laptops Direct do the Acer 5315 for £299, as well as some other well priced machines.
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/asp/price-search.asp?band=0

Saw a similar machine on special in a Tesco Extra for £289 - guess it depends on your local store's stock.

As Joe says, if you're going for Vista get loads of RAM. My partner Sandy replaced her 600 MHz Dell running XP on 256 Mb RAM with a 1.6 GHz Gateway running Vista on 512 Mb RAM and guess what - the new machine is marginally slower!

Best wishes, Nic

Beat me to it Deb, we do our Broadcall Laptop deal.

From £30/month (depending on your exchange) you get a Laptop, Line Rental, Lifetime warranty, Router, all the kit needed to set it up, free weekend & evening calls to landlines and me as your account manager.

Need UW membership (from £1.76 month) and to sign up for one of our excellent energy services - (guarenteed to be great value against the household names).  All above put on One Bill.
