Hi, I'm Alison Thompson (formerly Alison Neale). I live in Witney, Oxfordshire, UK and I have worked in the media and publishing industry on and off for the last 20 years.
My background is in publishing and I have over 20 years' experience of copywriting, copyediting and proofreading. Following jobs in newspaper and magazine publishing and a run of part time jobs (bookkeeping, childminding, office cleaning and Avon Lady!) whilst bringing up my family, I decided to go back to school at the grand old age of 31. Three years later I graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Media Technology and Production.
A stint as Picture Research Manager at Alamy, one of the world's leading stock photography libraries, followed, before I decided to take the plunge and go self employed, returning to my publishing roots with a local magazine.
However, I quickly discovered that while I loved writing for and producing the magazine, ad sales was not my forte - and so The Proof Fairy was born, making the most of my copywriting, proofreading and copyediting skills to help business owners and authors present themselves at their best.
While I love proofreading other people's books I became frustrated that I wasn't doing more writing myself - so in March 2013 I published my first book. The Boy from Hell: Life with a Child with ADHD is the story of the first fifteen years of my son's life, including his diagnosis with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, medication and diet, struggles to find the right education and more.
Writing the book took me in all sorts of weird and wonderful directions and I was invited to speak about my experience of ADHD at conferences and seminars. In 2014 I trained as an NLP Practitioner and coach and I set up ADHD Kids, to use my experience of parenting a child with ADHD to help other parents through coaching, support groups and training.
It also reshaped The Proof Fairy's core services and I now work with aspiring authors, helping them to tease out their passions and write books that will raise their profile and establish them as experts in their field.
Cleaned Alison's carpets in exchange for an ad in the COMMUNITY TIMES. She has handled it all in a very professional way and gave us a good spot and we have just had our first booking from it. She is very nice to work with and I would recommend her magazine to anyone looking to advertise in the area. MIGHTY COLIN
Alison is running ads for The National Pages in the Community Times in The Vale. This magazine has GOT to be looked at - it's such a professional and readable magazine I'm amazed that Alison can find the time to put it together every month. The ads are good value especially as I think as there's such good editorial in the mag that people will want to read it and will see the ads, as Mighty Colin has experienced. One of Alison's other businesses The Proof Fairy (proofreading) is a Gold member in The National Pages. You can check out the advertising we doing for Alison: Search for: Proofreader in Oxford Thanks Alison !
Alison is now my 'staff' proof reader for a technically-oriented newsletter that I put out for a client. She's quick, attentive, affordable and accurate – what more could you ask for? David Burn – Marketing & Research Projects
