The team is made up of Adrian & Jane Wilkinson, together with Annie, Charlie and Daisy our Otterhounds. Annie is the Editor in Chief of Trophy News, Charlie is our Logistics Hound and Daisy is our Networking Hound. You have our word that no kennels were hacked while bringing you any of this information...

Did you know that those well-known brands of pet food on supermarket shelves often contain ingredients such as meat and animal derivatives, large amounts of cheap cereals and artificial colourings?  In order to make this pet food palatable added ingredients would include sugar, salt and artificial flavourings.

Just like children, dogs will be full of beans and bouncing off the walls unable to concentrate if they are fed an unbalanced food. Indeed, before you even try to train your dog or improve their behaviour, you need to be sure you are feeding a good quality pet food that suits their needs. If your dog is barking, nervous, itching or pulling on the lead, their diet could be the cause. Your dog will simply not be able to concentrate on learning something new if their diet is full of poor quality & inappropriate ingredients. Most importantly a dog fed a balanced diet should only go to the loo once per day.

Some short term imbalances that may be observed in the dog:

  • Itching skin and ears
  • Dull 'starey coat', dandruff or offensive smell
  • Listlessness
  • Hyperactivity
  • Occasional motions
  • Loose motions
  • Constipation
  • Biting or licking the feet or other parts of the body
  • Impacted anal glands
  • Concentrated strong smelling urine
  • Bad breath
  • Tooth tarter
  • Wax in the ears

These symptons may not in themselves be symptoms of true illness, but they are signs that there is something wrong.

Take a look at the ingredients listed on the packet or tin & avoid the ingredients mentioned above and choose one that names a cereal like rice, oats or maize; Good quality foods should actually name the meat content such as lamb or chicken and does not use preservatives, flavourings and colourings.

Plump whole chickens, choice cuts of beef, fresh grains are all the wholesome nutrition your dog or cat will ever need. These are the images pet food manufactures project through the media and advertising.

What most pet owners don’t know is that the pet food industry is an extension of the human food industry. Pet food provides a convenient way for some companies to use ‘left-over’s’ and similar ‘by’ products to be turned into profit. Meat and Animal Derivatives are described as: sourced from animals which have been inspected and passed as fit for human consumption and are the parts of the animal which are surplus to the requirements of the human food industry in the UK e.g. heart, lung, or muscle meat, which may not be traditionally eaten by people in this country.

Why I’m good at what I do…

When Molly our English Springer came to join us from Dogs Trust Leeds in the summer of 2008 she was in poor health. Poor Molly had wet eczema with the vet prescribing expensive medication. At this point we spoke to Sue Reid at Trophy Pet Foods and after Molly eating Trophy Maintenance for a few weeks the eczema cleared.

During this same period I was at that midlife crisis point and needing a change of direction after working in the glass industry for the past eighteen years.

We decided that a Trophy Pet Food franchise was for us. We are now some four years on and loving every single day.
