Why I’m good at what I do…

I spent a gentle, happy childhood in a small village on the edge of the Yorkshire moors.

1971: After graduating in graphic design and photography at Carlisle College of Art and Design, I got my first job at a leading advertising agency in Birmingham, S. H. Benson, (later to become Ogilvy, Benson and Mather). I worked mainly with typography, setting ads for newspapers and magazines; with no computers, everything was done by hand. My boss was meticulous in the art of hand lettering and this lead to an abiding love for typography and calligraphy.

I then moved to BBC Pebble Mill and began a five-year stint as a graphic designer. This involved producing speedy graphic captions for daily transmissions of Pebble Mill at One and Nationwide News, as well as for locally produced dramas such as Poldark, Angels and All Creatures Great and Small. I designed the opening title sequence for the first ever Top Gear show – long before Jeremy Clarkson came onto the scene!

1980: the opportunity arose to move to Cairo. I lived with a Coptic family of engineers on the edge of the desert, some 30km from the city centre (a great source of interest to the neighbours who were not used to seeing 'foreigners' in their village). Just one person in the house spoke English so I set about learning Arabic. Daily shopping trips to the fruit and veg market, calligraphy lessons and watching Arabic TV helped to speed up the process.

Six months on, I accepted a post in the design studio with a local advertising agency near the great pyramids of Giza (book a one-to-one and I will give you an insight in what it was like to commutes in Egyptian traffic!). Soon after, I became art director, leading the team of designers and calligraphers. We designed corporate identities, annual reports for banks, storyboards for TV ads, outdoor advertisements, restaurant and hotel menus, in both English and Arabic. It was hugely busy and working through the night to finalise presentations for the next day was not unusual!

1985: I returned to the UK and found work in a design consultancy, designing packaging for companies based in Europe, the Middle East and Far East. (It was common to solve the conundrum of fitting five languages, an illustration and bar code onto a small label measuring four inches in diameter!).

1990: Having the language and knowing Egypt so well helped with a career change and I became a tour manager leading groups, initially, across the Middle East then worldwide. I encountered so many wonderful experiences travelling through places such as Mongolia, Antarctica, Sumatra, the Galapagos, Nepal, Tahiti...

1996: I joined the sales team of a luxury tour operator specialising in Asia, Oceania, Australasia, Far East and Middle East and advised many to experience intrepid, different and truly beautiful holidays.

2012: Dispensing with the horrendous commutes to work from home, I became a private travel advisor, offering a personal environment in which to book upmarket holidays. With 25 years’ knowledge and expertise of all the most luxurious places to stay across the globe I offer a personal concierge service and contact out of office hours; the Travel Counsellor trust fund keeps every penny spent safe.

2014: I joined a local art class (and met some wonderful eccentric ladies who went there to paint and enjoy a cup of tea and biscuits) and was introduced to pastel pencils for the first time. Someone gave me a card with a cat on it and I set about copying it. From this I started taking commissions and now do this on a regular basis. My ‘pawtraits’ grace the walls of houses in Kenya and the US, as well as here in the UK.

2015: Having an abiding passion for photography since studying it at art college, I have taken thousands of pictures throughout my journeys, and am currently putting together some of the best travel images for a coffee table book. I now specialise in portraiture and corporate photography. I also produce prints of wildlife and local places of interest, and will be bringing out a range of greetings cards in the near future.
