When John Mappin bought an old castle in Cornwall it was easy for him, with his background in filmmaking and music, and his love of legends and myths, to see his new acquisition as a place to make his dream come true – to create a magical site that would bring the history of the King Arthur era back to life. This was the start of the Camelot Castle Hotel, overlooking the ruins of Tintagel Castle, where King Arthur was reputedly born, and with magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean. Mappin and his partner, British artist Ted Stourton, set about renovating the old castle to create the modern, 4 room hotel that it is today, while preserving as much as possible of the spirit and style of the original building. The hotel is often referred to as “the Diamond of Cornwall”.
Mappin and Stourton have succeeded in creating a unique environment that is calm and inspiring, and offers something for guests from all walks of life. Alongside politicians, such as Sir Winston Churchill, writers such as Sir Noel Coward and actors such as Ava Gardner, couples and families have visited the hotel. For couples the Camelot Castle Hotel provides the perfect romantic getaway, while there are many attractions nearby for visiting families, such as Stonehenge and the Eden Project. Pets are also welcome for those guests for whom parting from the pooches is hard.
John Mappin is a known patron of the arts, and one of his main aims in building the hotel in its setting of unparalleled beauty was to create a haven for artists – a place where they can be inspired to create works of beauty that will survive for generations; almost a renaissance of our times. To further this aim, Mappin and Stourton have created an Artist in Residence programme that allows artists to stay at the hotel at no cost and soak up the inspiration provided by the hotel and its setting. The artists participating in this program have created some stunning art works and these are displayed at the hotel’s own gallery. With his own past in music, Mappin also encourages musicians to enjoy the unique, uplifting atmosphere at the hotel. For pianists among the musicians, there is a grand piano at the hotel, which they are invited to play for the enjoyment of the other guests. The Jive Aces, participants in the popular TV programme Britain has talent, were recent guests at the hotel.
As well as running the Camelot Castle Hotel, John Mappin has an active career in newspapers, owning a number of local publications that he uses as a platform for spreading his message of universal peace and inner tranquillity. Mappin has high standards and integrity, and believes in reporting the truth while focusing on positive items of news that are heartening for his readers.
John Mappin comes from a family of prominent British jewellers. He was educated at Winchester University, and today lives in Cornwall with his wife Irina, who is also active in running the Camelot Castle Hotel.
