Why I’m good at what I do…

Just one of the destinations you can explore with Away Holidays is Mauritius.

Mauritius is one of the top destinations for Away Holidays customers. Mauritius lies surrounded by the Indian Ocean’s turquoise waters, offering visitors the chance to experience the wonder of nature and to explore the unique, exciting local culture. For a luxurious getaway, few destinations are more appropriate, or more deservedly popular, than Mauritius.

Mauritius got its name from the name of the Dutch Prince Maurice Van Nassau. The Dutch influence is only one of the cultural influences that Mauritius has absorbed over its rich history. The capital city of the country is Port Louis and the overall population of the country is 1.2 million, including the population of the outer islands and Rodrigues.

A coral reef barrier that surrounds almost the entire island preserves and protects the white sandy beaches of Mauritius. On the southern end of the island, travellers who wish to see something different than the idyllic white beaches may observe wild waters and sharp cliffs, as this end of the island is not protected by a coral reef barrier. On the northern end, visitors can see lakes and the craters of inactive volcanoes.

Summer in Mauritius lasts between November and April, with the wettest months being December to March. However, even during the winter the average temperatures are between 17 and 23 Celsius.

Mauritius has absorbed many cultures throughout its history. The first to discover the island were the Arabs in the 16th century and the Portuguese also visited late in that century. The first colonists were the Dutch, then came the French and English in that order. Although the British ruled Mauritius for 158 years, French is still widely spoken. The British abolished slavery in the early 1800s, which meant that labourers were brought in from India. Muslim and Chinese traders came to the island’s shores throughout its history, as well, leading to a cultural and ethnic melting pot which is what Mauritius has become and is today.

English is the official language, but French and Creole are also common. Hindi and Bhojpuri are also widely spoken in Mauritius. In addition, many employees at hotels speak Spanish, Italian and German. The literacy rate in the country is 90%. Several religions exist in Mauritius, coexisting peacefully, including Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism. Mauritius is a democratic republic, with elections held every five years.

People wishing to go to Mauritius can explore several options at Away Holidays.
